Forty-one anxious 4-H members gathered at the beef barn for the annual 4-H Poultry Show and Sale during activities at the Warren County A&L Fair.
The members received 15-day-old baby chicks in April and took care of them for six months. They were required to bring three hens back for the show and sale. This year’s show was sponsored by Farm Credit Services of Mid America.
The 123 chickens represented two different breeds: black sex links and Rhode Island reds. The breed champions included Aiden Grissom for black sex links; and Nolyn Rutledge for Rhode Island red.
Reserve champion honors went to Macy Scott in the Rhode Island reds, and Caleb Wood in the black sex links. Blue ribbon award winners were Samuel Cope, Megan Davenport, Jana Denning, Jacob Wilcher, Nathaniel Womack, Joshua Young, Rachel Grissom, Ethan Hillis, Alexandra Jenkins, Blake Jenkins, Adisyn Judkins, Morgan Knight, Tyler Lea, Brianna Locke, Gregory Norton, William Prater and Abygail Reagan.
Red ribbon or white ribbon winners were Erin Cantrell, CJ Boyd, Matthew Carter, Jacob Carter, Dillon Hale, Brianna Hartl, Isaac Gillentine, Cullen Cruz-Lopez, Hunter Wilcher, Grant Yates, William Sweatman, Ethan Hitchcock, Grant Hitchock, Katie Johnson, Rachel Johnson, Teegan Jones, DeArrius Martin, Caleb McCormick, Emily Mullican and Cristian Olade.
At the conclusion of the Poultry Show, an auction was held where 41 pens (three chickens per pen) averaged $17 per bird. The money raised was used to award 4-H members with prize money and to purchase chicks for next year.
