Colors were flying Wednesday at Morrison School as students and faculty participated in their Color Flight activity. Large batches of colored cornstarch were purchased and through fundraising, students were able to participate in the Color Flight.
“We decided to name it Color Flight because we are the Eagles and they are all about flying in the wind,” said principal Kim Cantrell.
Several colors of cornstarch were available, with everyone getting dusted with green, the school color. Depending on the amount of donations brought in by students, they were sprayed with other colors.
First, everyone donned goggles, either theirs from home, or those provided by the school, before running through a water station. Everyone was sprinkled with water before getting dusted with the colored cornstarch, helping it adhere to their white shirts.
“We made sure it was 100 percent biodegradable and safe,” said Cantrell. “Our staff and volunteers had as much fun as the kids on this project.”
Teacher Monty Childers monitored the color fight area, where students could purchase additional cups of cornstarch and throw it on their classmates.
“This was the first time we did something like this, and it was a huge success,” said Cantrell. “We raised over $1,400, but it was more about making memories than about making money.”
The children were a colorful mess and before they could enter the school building, teacher Tisha Cocke blew them off with a leaf blower.
“This was so fun,” said first-grader Alyssa Dunn. “This is the most fun I have ever had at school.”
Cantrell conveyed her appreciation to all her staff for their cooperation, and she is especially grateful to her many volunteers helping with the project.
“We have wonderful parents who volunteer every day at this school,” said Cantrell. “When we have something like this, they are always willing to help. It was such a success, we will definitely do the Color Flight again.”
