“The more that you read, the more things you will know …” is a quote from Dr. Seuss describing how most educators feel about the importance of reading.
Teachers at Morrison Elementary held their ELA Family Reading Night Thursday with a Dr. Seuss theme and welcomed approximately 85 visitors to the library.
Their guest reader, Phyllis Covert, read the Dr. Seuss book “Mr. Brown Can Moo, Can You?” for the students.
Covert is a retired school teacher, who taught elementary school for 28 years and relocated here from California. She volunteers regularly at the school working with students in the library.
“Being a former teacher, I realize the importance of reading,” said Covert. “When reading, they entertain themselves, learn, build, create and learn many valuable things for life. I come here because I love to be around kids, and this way I get my kid fix.”
Following storytime, the students were able to visit the computer lab and take an Accelerated Reader quiz, or work on activity sheets set up at different stations around the room.
Many parents of attendees took the time to read a book to their child, some settling in a corner or cuddling their child in a chair enjoying reading time.
Parent of four, Beth Grubbs said, “Reading is critical to everything they do in their life. I read to my other three, and now am enjoying reading to my youngest, Sarah.”
Every child attending the reading night was given a complimentary book, with several door prizes also provided. Topz Frozen Yogurt and Regions Bank donated prizes to be given away. Both Jera Barnes and Taylor Lyle won silver dollars, and Lily Wanamaker was the big winner from Topz. Bella McCormick and Kiara Harrell won school photo packages, and lucky Olivia Smartt won a basketball pass for upcoming Eagles games.
