In 1963, President John F. Kennedy designated May as Older Americans Month, and it’s been an annual celebration ever since. This year Nashville-based eye surgeon Dr. Ming Wang will join the McMinnville-Warren County Senior Center in promoting awareness of this important occasion. The doctor will present an interesting and informative vision care talk at the center May 17 at 2 p.m.
Dr. Wang’s important program is not just for the center’s members. Everyone of all ages throughout the community is invited and encouraged to attend and meet him. There will also be an opportunity to tour the center and learn more about the important programs available to seniors throughout Warren County.
In addition to tips on vision care and information on the most updated options for corrective surgery to enhance vision, the renowned eye surgeon will also provide some special entertainment for the attendees. He will demonstrate his musical abilities with the er hu, a Chinese musical instrument similar to the violin. Dr. Wang learned to play the er hu as a teenager in China and used it to escape the devastating Cultural Revolution.
Accompanying the doctor will be professional classic guitarist, composer and close friend, Carlos Enrique Gonzalez. Dr. Wang is frequently called upon to speak about vision care, as well as, the preciousness of freedom and choice in America compared to the life he knew in China during the Cultural Revolution. These talks are often closed with special music by the two friends.
Additional information can be obtained by contacting the center at 931-473-6559.
