A pregnant woman who repeatedly shoplifted from Walmart – amassing over $3,000 in stolen goods – will be allowed to give birth before serving her week in jail.
The woman, Tammy Star Murphy, 42, entered guilty pleas before General Sessions Judge Bill Locke to the charge of theft. She was directed to serve seven days of an 11-month, 29-day sentence, make $420 restitution, perform 35 hours public service work and was warned to stay out of Walmart. Her jail time will be delayed until one month after the birth of her child at which time she must report and do her week in jail.
Her sentence comes after lawmen found thousands of dollars worth of items stolen from Walmart hidden in a barn. It was learned she committed several different thefts from the store.
“She just walked out the door,” said sheriff’s investigator Bo Ramsey, noting she would load her basket and leave the store without paying for the items.
The merchandise amounted to $3,347 and has been returned to the store. There was another $420 in perishable food items she took for which she must make restitution.
