Woman accused of stealing jewels

A teen accused of stealing over $20,000 during a jewel heist has been indicted on felony burglary charges.
The alleged burglar, Calie Lashae Smith, 18, has been indicted on the charge of aggravated burglary. Charges are also pending against the woman she told lawmen was her partner in crime.
Smith is charged for her role in the break-in of a Stubblefield Lane residence. Sheriff’s investigator Travis Thaxton says about $20,000 worth of jewelry was taken during the burglary and that he developed Smith as a suspect.
“Ms. Smith confessed to the incident,” Thaxton said in his warrant charging the teen with the felony. “She stated she drove Heather Grissom to the residence and watched her break out a window to the house.”
Smith said once the window was broken open she crawled through it to gain entry to the house.
“She climbed in the window while wearing gloves,” Thaxton said. “Once inside she unlocked the front door to allow Ms. Grissom to enter the residence.”
The jewelry was found once the women broke into the house.
“Ms. Smith watched Ms. Grissom carry out the jewelry in a black bag,” Thaxton said.
While Smith was indicted in an open presentment returned by the grand jury, any indictment against Grissom would be in the form of a sealed indictment because she was not first charged through an arrest warrant. Sealed indictments are not made public until they are served on the suspect.
