Independence Day activities set to blast off

Baby shows and ice cream should be easy to find this Thursday as communities from Morrison to Midway hold Independence Day celebrations.

In maintaining a recent trend, scattered thunderstorms could play into the mix as the extended AccuWeather forecast calls for showers and a high temperature of 88 on Thursday.

Activities are scheduled to get underway first thing Thursday morning in downtown McMinnville with a pancake breakfast and 5K footrace.

Other traditional favorites include the Yankee Doodle Children’s Parade at 9:30 a.m. and the Mr. and Miss Stars and Stripes Pageant at 11 a.m.

It’s an all-day affair in Midway with the opening ceremony set for 10 a.m. and a fireworks display scheduled for 10 p.m. In between, a baby show will be held at 10:15 a.m. and a Beatles tribute band called Forever Abbey Road will perform at noon.

Morrison won’t get started until late afternoon with a 3:45 p.m. opening ceremony, followed by a baby show at 4 p.m. Live music begins at 7 p.m., followed by fireworks at 9 p.m.

The Fairview community traditionally holds its celebration the Saturday before July 4, but its activities were canceled this year. Organizers hope to have an Independence Day celebration next year.
