ATLANTA (AP) — A former Georgia police officer accused of helping a street gang evade police faces a court hearing as part of a nationwide racketeering case.

A federal indictment accuses former DeKalb County officer Vancito Gumbs of tipping off Gangster Disciples members to police activity.

Prosecutors say Gumbs also claimed to be a hit man for the gang. It's not clear whether Gumbs ever actually killed anyone, and he's not charged with murder.

Indictments unsealed last week name 48 defendants who were arrested in nine states — Alabama, California, Colorado, Georgia, Illinois, Michigan, Nebraska, Tennessee and Wisconsin.

Gumbs is to appear Monday in federal court in Atlanta, where prosecutors are expected to try to keep him in custody. His attorney didn't immediately return a message seeking comment from The Associated Press.
