MARYVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Authorities say a 16-year-old boy who escaped from a juvenile detention center in Blount County has been found dead.

In a news release, Blount County Sheriff James Lee Berrong says the boy's body was found on the Maryville Greenbelt on Saturday morning.

Officials say the Friendsville teen escaped from the non-secure portion of the Blount County Juvenile Center at around 7:30 p.m. Friday after he assaulted a corrections officer and stole her service weapon. Law enforcement officers from the Maryville and Alcoa police departments, Knox County Sheriff's Office and Anderson County Sheriff's Office searched for him throughout the night and into Saturday.

An autopsy will be performed, but the sheriff says it appears the boy died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The death is being investigated.
