Mail carriers want to stamp out hunger

Local postal carriers are looking to make a special delivery this Saturday to the Warren County Food Bank. They are asking residents to make canned food donations at their mailbox to benefit the post office’s annual food drive, which is now in its 20th year.
“We want to help the shelves at the food bank stay full,” said postal carrier LaDonna Fann, who is spearheading the food drive.
Anyone making a donation is asked to leave the plastic bag hanging from their mailbox by 8 a.m. for collection.
“Some people put the bag by the base of the mailbox, which is fine,” said Fann. “But we’d really prefer for it to be hanging from the mailbox so it’s easy to grab as we deliver the mail.”
The food drive traditionally generates 15,000 to 18,000 pounds of canned food. The best year has produced about 25,000 pounds.
Fann says with some rural carriers participating with the city carriers, she hopes to approach the record. After carriers collect all the food Saturday, it will be taken to the Warren County Food Bank later that day.
