Volunteers are needed for a workday on the Bigbee River Trail this Saturday, Sept. 28.
“We need volunteers to work on a new section of the Bigbee River Trail,” said Wally Bigbee, work coordinator. “Please notify friends and members of your groups. We could use about 20 people, but also needed will be a couple carpenters. We need to build two wooden stairs.”
Work begins that Saturday morning at 9 a.m. and ends at noon. Individuals may park in the meadow of Sally’s Alley and sign in.
“The trail has been roughed in but needs to have treadway side slopes leveled and roots cut out with mattocks, picks, spades and shovels,” said Bigbee. “Loppers and hand axes can be used on roots. Stiff bladed rakes can be used to level loose earth. If you have a spirit level please bring it.”
Workers are also asked to bring hammers, hand or battery saws, tapes, battery powered drills with bits.
“We suggest that owners put their name on their tools,” said Bigbee. “We will have markers. Everyone should bring gloves or use ours. Open-toed shoes should not be worn. Workers are advised to bring a tote bag or day pack to carry personal snacks and lots of water.”
Waivers of liability must be signed. Non-adults must have signature of a parent or guardian.
The workday is sponsored by McMinnville Parks and Recreation and the Greenway Council.
