Approximately 100 children descended to the darkness of Viola Town Square on Saturday for the annual Halloween in the Park.
“There aren’t as many children this year,” said Kevin Deason, one of the organizers. Last year about 350 children were in attendance. “The weather may be keeping them away. It’s cold, but everyone seems to be enjoying themselves.”
This event is a free night of fun for trick-or-treaters with candy, cookies, desserts, drinks, hayrides, hot dogs, hot apple cider, and a best dressed costume contest.
Colton Myers took first place in the costume contest. His Forest Gump outfit included a box of Russel Stover chocolates and a hat with “Bubba Gump” on it. Second place went to Colton Deason with a Walking Dead costume. Hayes Harrell’s cowboy costume netted him third place. Each winner received a cash prize.
No adult categories were offered.
From Halloween with witches to Christmas with Santa Claus, the next big event for the fun-loving small town is its annual Christmas celebration that is also offered in Town Square. The events are a community effort by the residents of Viola.
