Two people were fatally injured and one is currently in critical condition following a wreck on Highway 55 Tuesday morning.

The wreck occurred around 7 a.m. and involved four vehicles. According to Tennessee State Trooper Ben Cannon, 18-year-old Daniel Davidson was driving a 2007 Jeep Wrangler inbound on Highway 55 when he crossed the continuous turn lane and went into oncoming traffic. Davidson reportedly struck a 2012 Ford Focus driven by 37-year-old Veronica Grifaldo. Her front seat passenger, 23-year-old Jennifer Grifaldo, was killed when the Jeep struck them.

Upon impact the Ford Focus spun and was hit again by a 17-year-old female driving a 2015 Ford Fiesta. Donald Carey, 69, was driving a 1998 Toyota Camry and swerved to miss the crashing vehicles in front of him and veered off the right side of the road and hit a concrete drain tile.

Davidson and Veronica were both taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center for life-threatening injuries. Veronica succumbed to her injuries and passed away at the hospital later Tuesday afternoon. The 17-year-old juvenile was transported to Ascension Saint Thomas River Park to be treated. Carey was uninjured.

It is unknown why Davidson veered into oncoming traffic and an investigation is ongoing.

“We have no idea why he went into the other lane. The investigation is still going on and it will take a while to figure out why he may have left his lane,” said Cannon.

At the time of printing, Davidson is still in critical condition.
