Exterior paint was included in the construction plans for McMinnville Civic Center.
“I checked the plans after the meeting,” said city administrator Nolan Ming. “The spec to paint the existing exterior actually was included in the design specifications. I’ve also looked through the documents and it was referenced in several different locations in the specs and the plans.”
During a previous meeting of the city Civic Center Ad Hoc Committee, Sain Construction Company project manager Mike Brewer informed members that exterior paint was not included in the project by HFR Design.
Ming said he is unsure which business is responsible for that oversight, but it might be a subcontractor.
“Right now, HFR and Sain are talking about how to fix it and what the next steps are,” said Ming. “Clearly, the exterior was meant to be painted. We held meetings to select colors. We viewed mock-ups to show those colors. The painter missed that he would have to paint the existing exterior of the building.”
Exact cost is unknown, but it will be thousands of dollars.
“It’s not our cost to pay – that’s going to be my recommendation to the mayor and aldermen,” said Ming. “It’s going to have to be someone else. They’ll have to eat that cost. Exterior paint was clearly an expectation of the city and of the architect.”
Estimated Civic Center completion date is Sept. 29.
