Namaste will be free and flowing at Cat Walker Field for the first Yoga in the Park class.
Yoga in the Park will begin this Saturday, July 27, at 7 p.m. Different parks throughout the city will be used once a month to hold the program.
Movies in the Park will be held in conjunction with Yoga in the Park and will follow the class with the showing of the film “The Lego Movie 2.” The film will begin at 8:15 p.m. at Cat Walker Field.
Mari-Lynn Wilson, the wellness coordinator of the Parks and Recreation Department, developed Yoga in the Park to promote mental and physical health, as well as bring awareness to the natural beauty the parks have to offer.
“I started this program because I wanted more people to be involved, not only in a health way because everyone in the community can benefit from the physical practice of yoga, but I also think people can benefit from the mental aspect,” said Wilson. “We’re all so busy these days. We have so many stressors going on in our lives. I really think people can benefit from just slowing down and combining the physical activity with the mental practice of yoga.”
All skill levels are welcome and the class is free to every member of the community. Yoga mats will be provided by the Civic Center. However, the mats are available on a first-come, first-serve basis. The session typically lasts 45 minutes to an hour. Bringing water is encouraged.
“Everyone is welcome. Little kids to the active elderly are all able to participate,” says Wilson.
Wilson is the instructor and leader of Yoga in the Park. She has been practicing yoga since 2012 and has taught yoga for two years. Wilson teaches yoga on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 8:15 a.m. at the Civic Center facilities at Three Star Mall.
