It’s down to the wire in qualifying for the open 5th District County Commission seat as the deadline falls at noon this Friday.
The position is currently being held by Tyrone Sparkman who was appointed to fill the seat last month by the Warren County Commission. The election is in August. The office came open after incumbent Melissa Yancy resigned her post earlier this year. Sparkman has also been nominated by the Warren County Democratic Party as its candidate for election to the office.
Presently, only one other person has qualified to seek the office. The candidate, Lori Judkins, will run as an independent. She also sought appointment by the County Commission as interim commissioner but was defeated 16-6 in a vote that was protested by some commissioners because they weren’t given a chance to hear from the two candidates before voting.
Anyone who may be eyeing a run for the seat should get their qualifying petition as soon as possible since it requires the signatures of 25 registered voters from the district in which the candidate is running.
Director of elections Donna Smith is also urging those who have not registered to vote to do so soon so they can vote in the August election.
