A mural project commemorating 100 years since Tennessee’s ratification of the 19th Amendment is moving forward.
“Thanks to Michael Griffith, Security Federal has volunteered the side of their other building for the mural,” said Tourism Development Board administrator Mandy Eller to board members. “It’s the wall opposite of the McMinnville mural. It's on the West Main Street side.”
Board members approved $7,500 to participate in a program called Walls for Women, an all-female mural festival across Tennessee. The program is offered by DMA (Do. More. Art) to honor women’s suffrage and commemorate Tennessee’s ratification of the 19th Amendment on Aug. 18, 1920.
The area was inspected and approved by Scott van Velsor. He and his wife, Kristin Luna, operate DMA as a nonprofit organization.
“We got the contract in and we’ll be matched with an artist soon,” said Eller.
The property owner, in this case Security Federal, will be allowed final approval of the artist’s plans before the mural is painted on the building.
An exact date for McMinnville’s mural placement is unknown. However, all murals are projected to be complete by Aug. 18.
