VFW Post 5064 and its Ladies Auxiliary presented Southern Standard reporter Lisa Hobbs with a Communications Award on Thursday night.
“We want to thank Lisa for all she does,” said Ladies Auxiliary president Phyllis Barnes. “She is a strong supporter of the VFW and Ladies Auxiliary, as well as the programs we provide. She has always been willing to help us in anyway possible.”
The Communications Award states, “For your role in providing outstanding news coverage for the Ladies Auxiliary VFW, we extend our sincere appreciation.”
Each year, Ladies Auxiliary members throughout the country provide five scholarship programs for students, volunteer in our hospitals, drive voters to the polls, assist homeless veterans, and raise more than $3 million for the Cancer Aid and Research Fund.
Barnes says those activities are possible through support from the media.
“On behalf of auxiliary members everywhere, thank you for your assistance,” she said. “Lisa, we appreciate you so much.”
A reporter for the Standard since 2005, Hobbs was surprised by the recognition.
“I want to thank Phyllis for her kind words,” said Hobbs. “I really appreciate this award. I didn’t expect it so I did the best I could not to cry. Awards are not something I expect, but I appreciate them when they are given.”
Hobbs added, “The VFW and Ladies Auxiliary do so many good things for veterans and the community. I feel honored just to be part of their efforts. We share the same beliefs, in that veterans should never be forgotten and helping others is the best gift you can give yourself.”
