Gibbs airlifted after crash in Smithville

Two McMinnville residents were injured Sunday afternoon in a crash that happened near downtown Smithville, one of the injured airlifted to Vanderbilt.The most seriously injured of the local residents, Christopher Daniel Gibbs, 36, was airlifted to Vanderbilt University Medical Center from the scene of the accident. The driver of the car in which he was a passenger, Carol Ann Tipton, 39, was treated at DeKalb County Hospital.According to preliminary reports, the crash happened at 3:11 p.m. Sunday on South Congress Boulevard in front of Jewel’s Market in Smithville.Investigators say Tipton was traveling southbound on Congress Boulevard in her 1999 Chevy Cavalier when she tried to make a left turn, putting her in the path of an oncoming northbound Jeep Cherokee driven by Jason Petre, 19, also of McMinnville. Officers say Tipton was trying to turn into the store parking lot when the crash happened.The impact on the passenger-side left Gibbs trapped inside the wreckage after the car was thrown through a wooden fence by the initial crash.
