Elected Official Spotlight - Deborah Evans

Deborah Evans

Most people know the two Warren County Commissioners representing their district, but what about the other 22 men and women?

Here’s a look at District 6 County Commissioner Deborah Evans, who currently serves on the Education Committee and Health and Welfare Committee.

Q: Briefly describe yourself.

A: I’m 62 and originally from Pennsylvania. I have five children, four married with children and 15 grandchildren and I’ve been married to my husband for 44 years. I was a nurse and at 42 I was diagnosed with throat cancer, had radiation, had a reoccurrence, and had major surgery where they actually took my vocal cords out. I don’t have any vocal cords. They used the cartilage to create what is called false vocal folds to make new vocal cords so that’s why my voice sounds the way it does, but I have been cancer free for 20 years and I can talk and I do not have a permanent trach.

At the same time, my husband was having coronary heart disease issues. He had open heart surgery two months before my major surgery. During that two year period, we used all of our savings including our 401(k). We had zero income and this community took care of us. Everything was provided and I’m still so thankful.

Q: What are your hobbies/interests?

A: Spending time with my grandchildren. My husband and I are beekeepers and I like to kayak, hike and read.

Q: What favorite color are you and how does being that color make you feel?

A: I’ve never had one. When my husband and I got married in the 70s, we had a rainbow wedding so I love rainbows. It makes me feel hopeful, happy, love and inclusive.

Q: Are you spring, summer, fall, or winter? Please share why.

A: Fall. I love the colors and crispness in the air, bonfires, Halloween, Thanksgiving and my birthday is in October. Oh, and pumpkin everything!

Q: What is something you are passionate about?

A: I get so focused on standing up for a group of people like gay people, dreamers, undocumented immigrants or anyone I feel like is being marginalized. I’m also pro-education and I love animals.

Q: Do you have any pets?

A: We have four dogs that all needed a home. Our lab was a stray, our Maltese, his owners couldn’t keep him anymore, we adopted our grand dog, a mixed breed and last summer we got a blind and deaf Yorkie. They are all older dogs. We also have one cat.

Q: Can you share one saying you love or piece of advice that keeps you going in life?

A: It’s a title of a Beatles’ song and it goes along with one of my favorite Bible verses – let it be. It goes along with Phil. 4:6-7 which God tells us not to worry about anything, to come to him and asking him for help to receive the peace of Christ.

Q: Do you have any specific goals to share?

A: Short term is to pass and balance the budget, to keep the public as informed as I can.

Q: Best way to communicate with you?

A: Email me at deborahevans6thdistrict@gmail.com or message my Facebook – Deborah Evans Warren County Commissioner 6th District.
