An iPhone helped catch an alleged thief red-handed after lawmen tracked the stolen phone to her house.
The suspected thief, Toni Jo Cunningham, 39, of Woodbury waived her right to preliminary hearing before General Sessions Judge Bill Locke and was bound to the grand jury on charges of grand theft and aggravated burglary.
Her arrest came for a burglary last month of a residence on Francis Ferry Road. The resident of the house said she returned home to discover someone had forced their way in through the back door. The burglar had taken over $10,000 worth of items including, but not limited to, two flat-screen TVs, drills, leather jackets, jewelry, a coin collection, and an Apple iPhone. It was that last piece of property that proved to be Cunningham’s downfall as sheriff’s investigators were able to use the phone to find her.
Using the tracking device installed in most iPhones, they tracked to phone to Cunningham’s exact location on Fowler Road in neighboring Cannon County.
“She admitted to having the phone and gave consent to search her room,” said sheriff’s investigator Jody Cavanaugh, noting officers hit pay dirt during the search. “A majority of the property stolen out of the burglary was recovered from her room.”
