Burks gets 48 hours for DUI

The man who drove his car into Country Club Lake Memorial Day afternoon entered a guilty plea to drunk driving charges the day after his arrest.
The driver, Dennis Burks was ordered to serve 48 hours of an 11-month, 29-day sentence, pay $350 plus costs, perform 24 hours public service work and lose his driver’s license for one year for DUI.
His charges come after he lost control of his car and splashed into Country Club Lake. His car sank to the bottom within moments, forcing him to escape the sinking car through the sunroof. Burks later admitted to lawmen that he had been drinking. He said he believed the accelerator stuck on his car as he coming down the hill toward the lake. Witnesses said they saw Burks driving on a flat tire just before the accident.
In other court cases heard Tuesday by Special Judge Barry Medley:
• Mary Hall was directed to serve 120 days, pay $150 plus costs and lose her driver’s license for third-offense driving on a revoked license.
• Jeff Cagle was ordered to serve five days of an 11-29 sentence and perform eight hours public service work for evading arrest.
• Gregorio Vanloo was ordered to serve 48 hours of an 11-29 sentence, pay $250 plus costs and perform 16 hours public service work for possession of marijuana.
• Samantha White was instructed to serve 48 hours of an 11-29 sentence, pay $250 plus costs and perform eight hours public service work for possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia.
• Deborah K. Dillard was instructed to serve 48 hours of an 11-29 sentence and pay $150 plus costs for possession of drug paraphernalia.
• Corey W. Thomas was directed to serve seven days of a six-month sentence and pay $150 plus for possession of drug paraphernalia and violation of probation. His probation was extended by six months on the violation of probation charge.
• Jayme Harvey was directed to serve 48 hours of an 11-29 sentence for shoplifting.
• Jairo Mendoza was directed to serve 48 hours of an 11-29 sentence, pay $360 plus costs, perform 24 hours public service work and lose driving privileges for one year for DUI and driving without a license.
