Basketball team takes shot at helping Habitat

The WCHS Lady Pioneer basketball team took time from driving the lane Saturday to drive a few nails for Habitat for Humanity.
Some of the girls and their parents spent around an hour Saturday at the 26th Habitat for Humanity home being constructed in Warren County. This residence is located on Estridge Street and will be the home of the Standefer family.
“It normally takes 14 Saturdays to build a home, but we will get this one done much faster,” said Habitat president Steve Koelbl. “Bridgestone is helping out with a blitz build from July 12-26. This home will be dedicated Monday, July 28.”
The dedication ceremony is set for 10 a.m.
Koelbl has been our local Habitat president since 2002. During that time, he has spearheaded work on 24 homes.
“I missed the first two because they had already been built when I came on board,” said Koelbl. “I’ve worked on 24 of the 26 homes.”
Habitat for Humanity homes are not a handout. They are built with volunteer labor which reduces much of the cost. The home owner is responsible for other expenses and given an interest-free mortgage. In return, they have to agree to volunteer and work on other homes in what’s called sweat equity.
