The Warren County Middle School fast-pitch softball team got together this past Saturday and competed against each other in the inaugural Red and Blue game. Despite the cooler temperatures and light, misting rain, a crowd of nearly 100 softball fans watched the action.
The Blue team grabbed the early lead on a line-drive shot into the gap in right-center field. The Red team was persistent and chipped away at the lead. At the end of the seven-inning game, which showcased the entire Lady Pioneer team, the game was won by the Red team, 10-2.
The Red team was coached by assistant coaches John Simmons and Nick Hollis. Assistant coach Hollis said, “I was happy with the outcome of the game but it was more about letting the public get a glimpse of what they can expect throughout this season.”
Several big hits were made. Madison Hollis smashed a pitch into the gap in right-center field. It looked like Hollis would have an easy stand-up triple. As she headed into third base, head coach Marc Pyburn waved her around and sent her home. It was one of the highlights by the Blue team.
The Red team would not be outdone. Calyn Damon started inside the pitching circle for the Red team and she went to work against the Blue. Her defense backed her up and knocked balls down on the infield. Solid throws to first base limited scoring for the Blue.
Other big hits came from Alia Atterson, Anniston McBride, and MaKenna Mason.
After the game, the Lady Pioneers provided everyone with food and drinks just for coming out and supporting the WCMS softball program. The plan is to make this an annual event.
All of the Lady Pioneers coaches are excited about this season and ready to get started. WCMS has a playday this Saturday in Lynchburg and will compete with two different teams. Each team will play three games. The first game of the regular season will be March 1 versus Harris at home with a game time scheduled 5 p.m.
