The Warren County Middle School girls soccer team continued its pursuit of success with a 5-0 victory over Algood Middle School on Monday night.
The Lady Pioneers battled through driving rain, and received a hat trick from Bailey Bundy, in securing a home win in the season-opener. Bundy scored two goals in the first half and one in the second.
Not only did the WCMS offense create opportunities, but the defense was able to hold its ground against the Algood strikers which gave the Lady Pioneers a shutout.
“Our athleticism and speed were on full display,” said WCMS coach Matt Walker.
Bundy showed this athleticism and speed by capitalizing on a shot that hit the post by Bekah Jackson. Bundy was able to track down the rebound and find the back of the net for her third goal.
Also scoring for the Lady Pioneers in the season-opener were Katie Toney and Breezy Wanamaker.
On Saturday, WCMS got its final preseason tune-up during a Coffee County Play Day. The varsity went 2-0 against Franklin North and Rockvale Middle School.
In the first game, Natalie Stepien was able to kick off the play day with a goal that she shot from outside the penalty box that went over the goalkeeper’s head. The Lady Pioneers also had a second-chance goal that Bekah Jackson shot that the goalkeeper dropped but Katie Toney was able to run in an earn a another goal.
“We came out and took care of business,” coach Walker said.
In the second game, the sun came out but that didn’t affect the Lady Pioneers as Jackson was able to dribble through the Rockvale defense. As she rared back to shoot, she also was able to blow a bubble with her gum that gave the Lady Pioneers their perfect play day record.
Thursday night at the WCHS soccer field will be the place where WCMS will take on rival Coffee County at 5 p.m.
