Clinging to a one-goal lead, the Warren County Middle School Lady Pioneer soccer team stayed the course and won a hard-fought victory over the Tullahoma Lady Wildcats, 1-0, at home Tuesday night.
“We just had more heart,” said WCMS head coach Matt Walker. “We refused to lose.”
The game was scoreless until three minutes before the half. That’s when Lady Pioneer striker Breezy Wanamaker beat the goalie for the only score in the game.
It was 60 minutes of refusing to give up on defense that won the game for Warren County, according to coach Walker, as Tullahoma outshot Warren County roughly 2-to-1. Caroline Stiles, goalie for WCMS, was tested and it was a combined team effort that won the match during eighth-grade night.
“The team was very emotional,” Walker said. “It was great to add a win to the equation.”
Walker praised administrator Christie Stiles, who helped make the eighth-grade recognition go off without a hitch.
WCMS eighth-graders honored were: Macie Powers, Esperanza Juarez, Dulce Quezada, Journey Cowan, Emily Malone, Caroline Stiles, Sarah Badger, and Izzy Simpson.
