Warren County High School’s Lady Pioneer softball team took the field for an inter-team scrimmage Monday night at WCHS to tune up for the 2017 season. The first home game for the Lady Pioneers will be March 16 when they play host to Shelbyville.
Finishing last season with an overall record of 15-13, 6-5, Warren County’s roster this year has two seniors who have already signed to play collegiate level softball. Neva Tackett and Skyler Youngblood both signed letters of intent earlier this year to attend Motlow on softball scholarships.
We’re excited about this season for our softball program,” said Warren County coach Gooby Martin. “Our girls have worked extremely hard this offseason in the weight room and with our conditioning program. We lost five senior starters to graduation last season, but this group is hungry and ready to compete.”
“This season will be different from past seasons,” Martin added. “In past seasons we have been pitching and a defensive team. This year we have some big bats which will be led by Neva Tackett and Skyler Youngblood. We will ask a lot of those two seniors offensively throughout the season.”
Coach Martin has some speed on the team this year as well.
“We also should be a little faster with players like Hailey Wood, Hope Mullican, Emily Mikkola, and Makenna Mason on the base paths. Our goal is to put pressure on our opponents night in and night out,” coach Martin said. “Pitching is a big part of this sport. We will be led by sophomores Maddie Cantrell and Aston Whiles. Junior Hope Mullican will also get some innings on the mound. Our goal every season is to win the district. We will give our best effort every night when we step on the field.”
Making up the Lady Pioneer team in 2017 are seniors Madison Mason, Ashlyn Patterson, Bethany Porter, Neva Tackett and Skyler Youngblood. Juniors are Lexie Chadwell, Kyra Hillis and Hope Mullican. Sophomores are Maddie Cantrell, Emily Mikkola, Grace Rains, Ashton Whiles, Hailey Wood and Brianna Young and freshman are Savannah Cox, Calyn Damon and Makenna Mason.
Helping coach Martin are assistants Nick Cantrell, Cody Crouch and Linsey Youngblood.
