The Lady Pioneers won their district opener with a 2-1 victory over Rhea County on Thursday night with goals by Makenna Mason and Sally Willmore.
“Overall this was a good win and an excellent way to begin our district play,” said WCHS coach Todd Willmore.
In the closing minutes of the first half, the Lady Pioneers were able to score off a corner kick by Willmore that Mason was able to redirect into the back of the net to put WCHS up 1-0 heading into halftime with momentum.
“We did a nice job of executing and had the goal framed perfectly by our players,” said Willmore.
In the second half, Rhea County kept the pressure on the WCHS defensive unit, but was stopped by Lady Pioneer keeper Rachel Stewart, who made some nice saves. With the lead, the Lady Pioneers weren’t done scoring their second goal on a penalty kick taken by Willmore.
Warren County was awarded the PK after Willmore played a ball forward to Mason, who was fouled in the box after tracking down the ball.
The Lady Pioneers held the 2-0 lead until 1:24 to play with a slight error and Rhea County capitalized on the WCHS mistake to move the score to 2-1. Fortunately, the Lady Pioneers were able hold off Rhea County to run the clock out after the mistake.
The Lady Pioneers will be traveling to Franklin County for a match that was rained out earlier in the season this Tuesday, Sept. 12 with the game starting at 5 p.m. for JV and 7 p.m. for varsity.
