WCHS soccer puts clamps on Cascade in 3-0 shutout

The Warren County High School soccer team didn’t get to start its season Monday night due to a rainout.
So on Thursday, the Lady Pioneers opened their season on the road by drenching Cascade, 3-0.
Sally Willmore and Abby Roller combined to give WCHS all the offense it would need, while the defense slammed the door on every Cascade attack.
“It was a nice way to begin the season,” said WCHS coach Todd Willmore. “We also realize there are some areas we still need to improve on as we progress through the remainder of the season. Two areas we emphasized during the preseason were passing accuracy and possession. Both were strengths for us last night. Another focus moving forward will be our team shape. There were times we were stretched out a bit and left several vacant areas on the field. However, it is a very fixable task.”
Roller scored the first goal from an assist by Willmore on a corner kick.
Willmore scored the second goal from a direct kick outside the penalty box to make the halftime score 2-0.
The third goal came from Roller on an assist from a ball played across the field by Maddie Merriman.
Defensively, Willmore said a number of individuals were visible.
“Rachel Stewart had an excellent game in goal with several quality saves,” he said. “The back four was anchored by Savannah Cox and had good support from Megan Winkler, Gwynie Simpson and Kyra Garrison. Sam Ramsey and Sarai Ruiz were solid in the middle of the field and made a number of contributions that may not be seen by the average viewer. It was a good team effort and we were able to get everyone who traveled playing time, which should be beneficial down the road.”
The Lady Pioneers stay on the road when they travel to Nolensville High School on Tuesday for a varsity game at 6:30 p.m.
The first home game for WCHS will be Monday, Aug. 28 versus Tullahoma.
