WCMS Pioneer John Jackson controls the ball moving forward in the teams away game with McCallie last week.
Every good thing has to end sometime, or at least that’s the wisdom spread around in your common gossip variety water-cooler conversations. When the WCMS boys Pioneer soccer team headed out Friday to play McCallie in Chattanooga, it had an unblemished 7-0 record, but definitely was mindful of McCallie’s skills.“They’re definitely one of the tougher teams we’re going up against,” said WCMS head coach Matt Jackson heading into the game.By jumping ahead quickly in the beginning minutes of the game, McCallie was able to score first and hang on to the lead for most of the contest, gaining one more goal before time ran out and the Pioneers suffered their first loss of the season, 2-0.“They scored in the first minute and caught us by surprise, then they scored a very good goal in the last few minutes of the first half,” said coach Jackson. “The second half we came out and fought hard but couldn't get a goal. We were missing a number of starters for different reasons.”“We have had our unbeaten streak broken, but we still have many goals ahead of us, including winning our conference championship but more than that becoming great players and a great team.”
