Talking Boyd basketball with Brock

The following is a Q&A with Boyd High School basketball coach Jamie Brock. The Broncos have started the season 0-2 and will be in action this Friday in the Cannon County Thanksgiving tournament.

Q: How do you feel about this year’s roster?
I like our roster very much.  I am very optimistic about this year.  There is no question we are a different team.  We have a much larger roster this year, 17 players.  There are many new faces and some familiar ones.  Jayden Reno is returning for his senior year and will bring his usual passion and intensity.  He is being joined by fellow seniors Josh Argo, Tyler Pomales, Blake Driver, Shawn Duncan and Carlos Medina.  They will be a great addition to the team and will hopefully be valuable contributors.  Greg Southard is our only junior, and I’m confident he’ll give 100 percent.  I am excited about the progress our sophomores have made over the summer.  Jordan Hoover, Joel Smith, Jamison Brock, Bryson Stiles, Dallas Greene and Alden Lawrence are all back with us again.  Jalyn Mart is an excellent addition to that group bringing a high level of athleticism.  The freshmen group of Mark Mason, Jayce Oliver, and Cain Buckner have some great potential, and I am very excited to see how they progress through the season.
We are a very young team in both age and experience, but there is a lot of upside to this group.  I can't wait to get into the season.

Q: Do you think you  can continue the sustained success from the previous years?
There is no doubt the bar has been set pretty high over the past few seasons.  However, we have a talented group of guys that are hungry for that same success.  I have seen a tremendous amount of progress since we kicked off practice in the summer.  The guys have shown their ability to work hard at practice and to challenge and push each other to that next level.  I have confidence in each of them and the skills they bring to the team.  I know if we work together as a team, we will indeed succeed.

Q: How do you feel your team will look this season, style wise?
I know our style will be a bit different.  That is inevitable with a coaching staff change.  Brandon Stiles and I have coached together for many years and have a system that works.  Ryan Mason is also joining the coaching staff and will bring his experience to our scheme.  So, the Bronco fans can look forward to a determined team that plays with energy and passion every minute.  We don't take plays off.
Q: How do you see your team faring in the conference? Who do you feel will be the biggest challenges?
We are aiming for the top of the ranks.  No question about it.  With the talent we have on the team , the passion for the game, and a desire to win every play and never stop improving, there is no reason we should not reach that goal.  As far as the biggest challenge,  it is probably our inexperience.  We simply have some guys that have not played at this level before.  I expect there will be some struggles early on as they adjust to the pace and intensity of the game.  But, as I mentioned earlier, they have worked hard in the preseason and are well prepared.  We also have depth, which gives me a lot of options to find the combinations that work on any given night.
I am blessed and thankful to have the opportunity to coach this group of young men.  Their ability and love for the game as individuals is something my fellow coaches and I hope to take and turn into a successful team. I am proud to be their coach and look forward to another great season of Boyd basketball.  God Bless and Go Broncos!
