In his first year as head coach of the Warren County High School boys basketball team, Chris Sullens will go into the summer with a roster of 22 players.
Six seniors, four juniors and 12 sophomores made the cut Friday when Sullens revealed his roster that will take part in summer workouts and camps the Pioneers will be attending. The final number was cut down from over 50 players who showed up on the first day of tryouts.
The list includes seniors Zech Clark, Chandler Cassel, Alex Cripps, Carlos Villegas, Shelby Curlee and Malik Ladet; juniors Christian Wilkinson, Holden Baker, Jack Davidson and Robert Selig; and sophomores Isaac Golden, Tyler Beaty, Raleigh Woods, A.D. Majors, Trey Cantrell, Hunter Hawkins, Krojhn Calbert, Isaiah Blanton, Joelah Solomon, Brendan Breedlove, Alex Yates and McCall Turner.
Coach Sullens will continue evaluating the players throughout their summer work.
“These are current students we are going to work with through summer that currently attend WCHS,” said Sullens. “As we progress we will determine who can help us at the varsity and/or junior varsity level. We also will see how much attrition will occur from those who may not be able to handle the rigors that come with high school sports.”
Sullens, along with new assistants Anthony Lippe, Adam Wood and Stephen Gleen, believes the 22 playersearned the opportunity to come back and compete for positions in the summer.
“These decisions are never easy. My staff and I spent several hours debating this and we feel these young men deserve the opportunity to prove themselves over the summer months,” said Sullens. “We appreciate all those current students who tried out for this team.”
From the list, nine played at WCMS – Clark, Ladet, Davidson, Golden, Majors, Calbert, Blanton, Solomon and Breedlove. Beaty, Woods, Yates and Hawkins each played on championship teams at Eastside. Cantrell and Wilkinson won a championship together as Dibrell Wildcats, while Cripps and Turner attended Centertown. Baker and Selig played at Morrison and Irving College, respectively.
Warren County will have its first practice Tuesday, May 20 from 5-7 p.m. A parent meeting will follow at 7 p.m.
Coach Sullens will add more players to his roster when he holds more tryouts in late May. Upcoming freshman and any other students who may be planning to attend Warren County High School in the coming year may try out Saturday, May 24 from 11 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. and Tuesday, May 27 from 4:30-6 p.m.
