Action was kicking Saturday at Pistole Park as the youth soccer league had its second weekend of competition.
In the 9-10-year-old league, coaching veteran Dabe Banerjee had his troops finely tuned and scoring with precision. Banerjee’s Team Blue grabbed a 4-1 victory over Team Silver.
Team Blue went ahead early when Edwin Zarate blasted in a goal for a 1-0 lead. Ashton Martin made it 2-0 when he gained control of the ball and dribbled straight for the goal. With the keeper coming out to provide pressure, Martin fired a shot that found the far corner of the net.
Team Silver showed its resiliency when Ky Damon produced a fast-break goal. With a defender on her hip, Damon streaked down the field and kicked the ball past the keeper, 2-1.
That would be the highlight for Team Silver as Team Blue didn’t allow a second-half goal in winning 4-1.
In the 11-12-year-old league, it was the first game of the season for Team Green coached by James Hines. Team Green, with blazing speed and strong dribbling skills, showed it’s going to be difficult to beat as it captured a convincing 7-2 win over Team Blue.
Team Green mounted a non-stop assault on goal with shots coming from every direction. It was too much for Team Blue to overcome.
Jay Grox had one of the many highlights for Team Green when he launched a hard shot from outside the box with a defender in his face. Grox had just enough space to get the shot off and just enough velocity to get it past the keeper.
