The smallest Pioneer football players are packing some of the biggest hits of all.
The Warren County 5-7-year-old football team is off to a 3-0 start behind an explosive offense and a no-nonsense defense.
On Saturday, the Pioneers ran all over Shelbyville for a 38-6 victory behind 3 rushing TDs and 1 passing TD from QB Levi Scott.
“Our boys are impressive,” said coach Steven Weeter. “As far as paying attention, they’re great. They listen and they’re disciplined. Shelbyville’s only touchdown came late in the game.”
The Pioneer offense utilizes shotgun formation, which is unusual for such a young group. Coach Weeter says his players have shown they can handle it and it’s allowed for Scott to throw for passing yardage.
The Pioneers opened the second half with a bang as Scott connected on a pass to Travian Mathis on the very first play and he took the ball to the house for a long TD. It was one of his two scores as he also had a rushing TD.
Bruising RB A.J. Whitman also powered in a TD for the Pioneers. Brookx Weeter added two receptions to the offensive fireworks.
Defensively, Braxton Jordan and Kayman Curtis led the Pioneer charge from their defensive end positions. Coach Weeter praised the hustle of Mathis in saving a touchdown before the half.
“Their guy was breaking free for a touchdown and Travian chased him down from behind,” said coach Weeter. “He not only made the tackle, but he caused a fumble. It was recovered by Merek Sadlon to keep them off the board late in the first half.”
The Pioneers face their biggest challenge yet when they hit the road to face an undefeated Winchester team this Saturday.
“Both of us are undefeated and we’ve both been winning by pretty large margins so we’re looking forward to this weekend and the challenge,” said Weeter.
