It looked like last May all over again for the Lady Pioneer Friday night.
Madison Hollis was throwing darts in the circle, the Warren County bats were cooking and the defense flew around to preserve a shutout. All the pieces came together to help the Lady Pioneers beat William Blount 7-0 for their first win while playing in the Commando Classic in Hendersonville.
“We swung the bats well, Madison pitched great and the defense was solid,” said coach Gooby Martin, reciting the recipe that carried the team to a region championship last spring.
Hollis was almost unhittable, throwing five innings and striking out 10 for the first win of her sophomore campaign. William Blount finished with just two hits and never had a runner reach second base.
Elia Atterson outhit the Lady Governors on her own, finishing with three hits, including the game’s biggest blast. The junior outfielder started the scoring with a three-run homer in the third inning, giving Hollis all the help she needed.
It wasn’t all she would get though.
Calyn Damon finished 2-for-3 with an RBI single in the third, while Rhealee Johnson and Sadie Simmons each ripped run-scoring singles in the fourth. Aleya Esparza completed the team’s scoring with a RBI groundout during a five-run third frame.
Unfortunately, Friday night ended the same way last May’s season did.
Siegel took down the Lady Pioneers 3-0 in the nightcap. Simmons had the team's lone hit and took the loss, throwing five innings in a rematch of last year's sectional matchup. The Lady Stars eliminated the Lady Pioneers in the postseason last year with a 14-0 romp.
Warren County was scheduled to continue play Saturday in the Classic, but results were unavailable at press time.
The Lady Pioneers are scheduled to make their home debut Monday against Coffee County before making a trip to Stone Memorial Tuesday for a District 6AAA matchup. Both games are scheduled to start at 5 p.m.
