When Ashton Whiles is hitting her spots, Roger’s Service is a tough team to beat in the girls 9-10 junior league. Whiles was on the mark Thursday night.
Whiles struck out 12 batters and added an RBI single as Roger’s Service defeated TT&G Construction 7-5.
Standing tall in the circle, Whiles battled back from early struggles to notch her third win of the season.
After allowing two runs and one hit in the first inning, Whiles went on to hold TT&G Construction hitless the next four innings as her “K” count grew.
While Whiles held TT&G Construction off the scoreboard, Roger’s Service used opportunistic offense to build a lead.
Roger’s Service scored three times in the top of the first despite notching only two hits.
Whiles started things with a one-out triple, then came around to score on a passed ball.
Grace Rains and Mary Ella Lee followed by drawing walks, then two more passed balls allowed Rains to score and Lee to move to third.
Kensley Whiteaker drove in Lee with a single as Roger’s Service built a 3-0 lead.
Savannah Cox’s RBI single in the first for TT&G proved to be the team’s lone hit and Cox would steal three bases to make it 3-2 early.
Whiles helped herself out in the third when she singled in Kaydee Rains, then stole three bases to extend the lead to 5-2.
Cox was instant offense again in the fourth as she walked and stole three bases to slice the lead to two going into the fifth.
Five free passes helped Roger’s Service take a commanding lead in the fifth. Abby Beaty and Rachel Stewart each scored on walks, putting Roger’s Service ahead 7-3.
Whiles finished her night in the circle in the bottom of the fifth by striking out the side.
TT&G made a late rally by scoring twice in the bottom of the sixth off Kaydee Rains, but Roger’s Service held on to win by two.
Whiles and Whiteaker finished with one hit apiece for Roger’s Service Company, which improved to 3-2 for the season.
Cox had the only hit for TT&G and took the loss, pitching five innings and allowing seven runs on two hits. TT&G remained winless, falling to 0-6.
In other girls junior league action, Ben Lomand Connect took over the top spot in the league standings with an 11-2 win over Sonic.
Both teams entered the game 4-1, but a four-hit, five-RBI game from Annaston McBride was the difference as Ben Lomand Connect picked up a big victory.
Madison Cantrell also helped the cause as she pitched all five innings and recorded every out by strikeout. Cantrell finished with 15 strikeouts, including striking out the final 13 batters she faced.
Hailey Wood finished with two hits for Ben Lomand Connect, while Brianna Young and Sierra Matthews added one hit each.
MaKenna Mason had the only hit for Sonic, an RBI single in the first inning.
