Pioneer runner Peyton Norris is safe at home Monday after beating a close play by the catcher. The Pioneers split a pair of games with Rhea County winning Monday, but dropping Tuesdays.
The Pioneers, hot on the trail of a second win over Rhea County, were caught in a scoreless pitching battle until the top of the fifth when Ethan Smith grounded out in a fielder’s choice scoring Nick Williamson, 1-0, in what they hoped would be a breakout in Dayton on Tuesday night.Unfortunately, it was the Rhea County Golden Eagles who had the big fifth inning after retiring the Pioneers, scoring 4 runs it what would be the final score, 4-1.With the loss Tuesday, Rhea County (7-1) is up 2-1 in games versus the Pioneers (6-3) in district actionKelly Guthrie earned the win for Rhea County throwing 6 innings, allowing 1 run, 4 hits, and 6 strikeouts in the low-scoring contest. Tyler Hollingsworth took the loss for the Pioneers. He threw 4-2/3 innings giving up 4 runs, 7 hits and 8 strikeouts.Pioneer Ethan Smith went 1-for-2 at the plate and Cole Estes, Wesley Jennings and Nick Williamson all were 1-for-3 with Smith getting the RBI. The Pioneers played flawlessly, committing not a single error.The Pioneers are scheduled to play in Shelbyville on Friday at 5 p.m., and again at home Saturday at 12 noon.
