WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. (AP) — Jay Berger will coach the U.S. men's tennis team at the Rio de Janeiro Olympics in place of Davis Cup captain Jim Courier, while Fed Cup captain Mary Joe Fernandez will coach the country's women at the Summer Games.
The U.S. Tennis Association announced the Olympic coaching staff Thursday.
Dan James will coach the U.S. Paralympic wheelchair tennis team.
USTA spokesman Chris Widmaier said that Courier "elected not to accept" the position as Olympic coach. Berger, who is the head of men's tennis for USTA Player Development, also coached the American men at the 2012 London Olympics.
The Olympic tennis competition runs from Aug. 6-14.
The Paralympic Games are Sept. 7-18, also in Rio.
Fernandez has been the coach of the U.S. Fed Cup team since 2009, and she coached the women's Olympic tennis team four years ago. As a player, she won gold medals in doubles at the 1992 and 1996 Games.
The U.S. tennis roster for Rio will be announced in the coming weeks.
