League leaders stay unbeaten

The Little Pioneer League has seen two teams rise to the top in their respective divisions. Small Shots started out 6-0 in the boys league, while GBR Construction duplicated the feat in the girls division.
Both teams were able to keep their undefeated seasons alive Saturday, but it wasn’t easy for either squad.
Small Shots had to win a free-throw shootout in overtime to beat the Outdoor Shop while GBR Construction rallied late to best Big Mo’s 19-11.
The Little Pioneer League, run by WCHS girls basketball coach Erick Baird, set up before the season any game tied in regulation would go to the free-throw shootout to decide the winner.
The scenario played out when Small Shots and Outdoor Shop finished their game Saturday tied 14-14. Small Shots was able to run its streak of wins to seven straight when it hit 4-of-5 free throws while Outdoor Shop hit only one.
Braylon Grayson took a starring role for Small Shots with 11 points to lead the team to victory. Jax King led Outdoor Shop with four points.
Big Mo’s gave GBR Construction all it could handle as the league’s leading scorer Shelby Smartt had a big game.
Smartt’s seven points helped Big Mo’s lead early and stay close, but Kinslee Grissom scored six points down the stretch as GBR Construction won by seven to improve to 7-0.
In other Little Pioneer League action, Southern Standard picked up its second shutout this season as the boys team defeated River Park Hospital 17-0. Owen Clark scored six points as he moved into second place on the league’s scoring list behind Nathan Elrod from Small Shots.
Team Tennessee also won in the boys league as the team defeated Sullen’s Shooters 13-6. Wesley Sherrill reached double figures with 10 points for Team Tennessee while Brett Cantrell scored four points for Sullen’s Shooters.
Also, the Law Office of Jean Brock won for the second straight weekend over Woodlee’s Woodchucks in girls action. The Law Office of Jean Brock won 11-1 behind eight points from Marcie Pope. Mary Grace Martin scored the lone point for the Woodchucks.
The Little Pioneer League will continue play this weekend with a slate of five games at Charlie Dalton Gym. Action is set to begin at 8 a.m.
