Pioneer coach Danny Fish is fond of saying that every game is a chance to win or learn. In Winchester, Warren County had to learn the hard way about finishing in tight games.
Franklin County was able to edge the Pioneers 49-48 at home, surviving three late chances for Warren County to win in the final minute. The Pioneers had two turnovers and a missed layup down the stretch, sending it record to 1-3 early this season.
Treyton Terry, who scored a team-high 15 points, gave the Pioneers a 48-47 lead with 1:30 to play when he drained a 3-pointer from the top of the key.
Franklin County responded with two free throws, swinging back in front by one with 65 seconds left to play.
It was more than enough time for the Pioneers to execute and steal a win on the road, but Warren County had trouble getting out of its own way. Terry was called for a travel on the ensuing possession, slamming the ball in frustration after he shuffled his feet just before starting an attack of the paint against the Rebels.
Warren County tightened up on defense after the miscue, scrambling everywhere to swarm the Rebels for 20 solid seconds. In the midst of Warren County sending double teams everywhere, Franklin County popped open on the backside for a potential easy layup, but the Pioneers converged quickly.
Aaron Templeton hung in the air to force an awkward attempt that spun out and Alex van Vuuren ripped down the rebound, securing possession for the Pioneers.
Following a timeout, Terry tried to atone for his turnover by getting all the way to the rim on an attack, but he was blocked right before he could try to bank in a game winner.
Franklin County secured possession and was fouled with 3.4 seconds left, sending the Rebels to the line. Two misses kept the door open though, the second Warren County was able to grab quickly and take a timeout with 2.9 seconds remaining.
Going 94 feet in a short timeframe was going to be difficult, but it turned out to be an impossible task when Templeton's long ball was picked off by the Rebels at halfcourt, sealing the victory for Franklin County.
It was a tough way to end for both Terry - who had two key buckets before his 3-pointer to get the Pioneers back in the game late - and Templeton, who nailed a crucial 3-pointer in the fourth during the comeback.
Warren County had trailed by as many as 10 in the first half before triples by Templeton and Terry gave the Pioneers short-lived leads in the final quarter. The Pioneers also led in the opening minutes, getting a triple from van Vuuren to open the game and another long ball from Terry to make it 6-3.
