Caylie Sherrell and Callie Cathcart are the two top scoring players in the girls 7-8 grade elementary league. It’s no wonder their Irving College Lady Tiger team is unbeaten this season.
Irving College improved to 3-0 Monday night with 50-21 road victory over the Eastside Lady Bulldogs. Sherrell and Cathcart did most of the damage as the Lady Tiger guards scored 20 points apiece.
Irving College came into the regular season with high expectations that were only bolstered by a preseason Morrison Ruritan tournament championship. Their talented backcourt was a big reason for the optimism.
Sherrell and Cathcart looked like an unstoppable duo against Eastside as they fired away from outside and got to the paint at will. Both players had 11 points before halftime as they combined to score 22 of their team’s 26 first-half points.
Cathcart started the game with six quick points against the Lady Bulldog defense. Sherrell added a 3-pointer, which gave Irving College an 11-1 lead at the time. The lady Tigers would lead 14-1 after the first quarter after another layup by Cathcart and a free throw by Sherrell.
The Irving College guards swapped roles in the second quarter as Sherrell got to the paint for layups and Cathcart added a 3-pointer to the cause. By the time the duo was done scoring, the Lady Tigers led 26-11 at halftime. Kapri Talley carried the Lady Bulldog offense with six second-quarter points.
Talley started the second half by connecting on a three-point play, but Cathcart answered back with a 3-pointer. Candace Wanamaker stepped up with four points in the third period as Irving College went ahead 39-18 entering the fourth quarter.
Sherrell and Cathcart went to the bench late with the Lady Tigers winning big, but not before both pushed their scoring totals to 20 points for the night. For the season, Sherrell averages 18.7 points per game while Cathcart is right behind with 16.7 points per game.
Cassity Wanamaker, Gabby Magness and Cheslee Curtis had two points apiece for the Lady Tigers.
Talley finished with 11 points for the Lady Bulldogs, who fell to 1-2. Kaitlyn Brock, Jaylen Boyd, Tori Whitman, Madison Parsley and Sheridan Brock had two points each.
