Coming down to fourth-quarter action, the Warren County Middle School Lady Pioneers notched another win as they played host to Irving College, defeating the Lady Tigers, 18-15, in Monday night 5-6 grade elementary basketball play.
The Lady Tigers led 9-7 at the half, and the game was tied after three quarters, 11-11. The fourth quarter was the decider as Lady Pioneer Kyra Perkins hit a perfect 3-pointer heading up a 7-4 outscoring of the Lady Tigers. Pressing defense helped Warren County Middle School as Irving College could have tied it up with one shot outside, but they were denied the opportunity as Mia Hobbs took the shot just shy of a tie. With 7 seconds left, the Lady Pioneers forced a turnover to keep possession until the buzzer.
“We played hard,” said Warren County Lady Pioneer coach Leann Morrison. “We cut down on the turnovers. It was a very aggressive game on both sides.”
Neither team did well from the foul line as Irving College was 4-for-19, while Warren County Middle School made 3-for-15.
“We just didn’t come out on top,” said Irving College coach Randy Bess. “The girls showed up to play, and played very scrappy. It could have gone either way.”
Scoring for the Lady Pioneers were Perkins with 9 points, Samantha McCormick with 4 points, Kinslee Grissom had 3 points, and Rosa Terrasaz was good for 2 points.
Hitting the hoop for the Lady Tigers were Hobbs with nine, and Brooklyn Wanamaker, McKenzie Hillis and Jessie Young all with 2 points.
Warren County Middle School played West on Tuesday night and Irving College took on Boyd Christian School. Results were not available at press time.
