Coach Erick Baird prides himself on what his Warren County High School girls basketball team does on and off the court.
The Lady Pioneers picked up 17 victories this season, but Tuesday’s award ceremony at the District 6-AAA tournament may have given Baird his biggest win yet.
The Lady Pioneers were honored with the District 6-AAA sportsmanship award in recognition of their positive attitudes on the court and the great work the team did in the community this season.
Coach Baird believes the award recognizes not only his team, but the parents who help within the program.
“It is a testimony to how hard our players and parents work. From the hospitality room to the oncourt actions of our kids, the award gives notice to the character that is displayed by our community at basketball events,” said Baird.
Baird noted his team’s varsity GPA is a cumulative 3.7 and the team has also been involved in charity work with Habitat for Humanity and the Kay Yow Foundation. The Lady Pioneers held Pink-Out Night for the fifth year this season and helped raise $750 for breast cancer research.
While being model citizens off the court, the Lady Pioneers were also able to record the first winning record under Baird in his five years as Warren County coach. Their play was just another way of showing great character as coach Baird has talked all season about the group’s willingness to do whatever it took to win.
“These girls have done everything I’ve asked this year and they were able to accomplish the first winning record for this program in more than a decade while being outstanding members of the school and community. This just shows how much time our kids put in,” said Baird. “I’m pleased to see this honor, voted on by our district coaches, be given to our team.”
