Tuesday evening in Cookeville, the Lady Pioneer bats were on hiatus as the Cookeville Lady Cavaliers defeated WCHS by a final score 4-1.
It was not for lack of effort by Warren County pitcher Erin Hollis, who allowed four runs on five hits and collected five strikeouts with no walks.
Warren County never had an inning where it looked in control until the top of the third when the Lady Pioneers mounted a two-out rally. Lindsey Cox singled to centerfield and advanced to second base on a passed ball. With Neva Tackett in the box for Warren County, Cox advanced to third and home on wild pitches thrown during Tackett’s at-bat. Cox pulled the Lady Pioneers within one run at 2-1 before Tackett grounded out to shortstop.
Leading the game 2-1, Cookeville responded by adding to its run total. Lady Cavalier runners were on the corners with no outs when Cookeville smashed a double deep to centerfield, which scored both runners to go up 4-1.
Hollis hit the following batter and two runners were on for Cookeville. Hollis collected herself and responded with a strikeout for out one. A fielder’s choice and a ground ball to shortstop ended the Lady Cavaliers run but not until after Cookeville added two more runs and extended its lead, 4-1.
The fourth inning both teams went down in order.
The fifth inning led off with Hollis being hit by a pitch and she was given a courtesy runner. Hope Mullican took first base for the Lady Pioneer pitcher.
Abby Hutchins got called out on strikes and Walker drew a walk to put two runners on base for the Lady Pioneers. Ramirez went down swinging to end the inning and it was over as quickly as it had started.
Cookeville went down in order again with a lead-off fly ball for an out to centerfield. Hollis blew strikes past each of the next two Lady Cavalier batters and she caught both of them looking for the second and third outs to end the fifth.
Warren County threatened again in the top of the sixth but with no luck. The bats were warmed up but quickly cooled off.
Tackett singled to centerfield giving Warren County one on and one out. Skyler Youngblood singled to right field and Tackett advanced to third from first.
Warren County was about to strike. However, a ground ball to the pitcher who checked the runner and got the out for the second out of the inning and a ground ball to third base ended the Lady Pioneer chances of getting any closer and the score remained 4-1.
Bottom of the sixth, Hollis again went right after the Cookeville batters. The batters retired in order by way of three ground balls for another one, two, three inning for the Lady Pioneer defense.
Warren County’s last chance started with a lead-off pop fly to shortstop for out number one. Hutchins singled to left on a hard hit ground ball for the first Lady Pioneer runner of the inning. Cookeville responded with a strike out for out two. The final out was a ground ball to the Lady Cavalier pitcher who made easy work of out three.
Warren County will be back at home this afternoon versus Coffee County with game times set for 1 and 3 p.m.
