Lady Pioneers drop home opener to Riverdale

The WCHS Lady Pioneer soccer team played its first game at home Thursday night when it hosted the Riverdale Warriorettes.The Lady Pioneers were coming off a road game against Tullahoma on Tuesday night and were looking to start their home record on the right foot.The Lady Pioneers and Warriorettes battled back and forth the entire game, but the Lady Pioneers never led, despite several shots just missing the back of the net.The Warriorettes scored two goals and that was all they needed as they ultimately defeated the Lady Pioneers, 2-1, spoiling their first home game.The Lady Pioneers were led by Samantha Ramsey, who scored the lone goal for the Lady Pioneers.The Warriorettes and Lady Pioneers used stifling defense the entire first half to keep each other off the scoreboard.Midway through the first half, the Lady Pioneers missed an opportunity to take the lead as a ball went off the Riverdale left crossbar, keeping the game scoreless.With nine minutes to go in the first half, the Warriorettes found the back of the net to break the scoreless tie, 1-0.The Warriorettes led at the half by the same margin with 40 minutes to go.Eight minutes into the second half a perfectly played ball by the Warriorettes found the back of the net for their second goal to give them the two-score lead, 2-0, with 32 minutes to play.Both teams kept each other off the scoreboard until four minutes left in the game when Ramsey found the back of the net to trim the Warriorette lead to one, 2-1.The Lady Pioneers tried to get shots in the back of the net in the closing minutes, but failed to do so as the Warriorettes ultimately won the game.The Lady Pioneers will be back in action Tuesday as they face Coffee County. The Lady Pioneer JV team will play at 5 p.m. and varsity will follow at 7 p.m.
