The Hickory Creek Lady Hawks soared over the Irving College Lady Tigers to place first in the District 1 preseason tournament in 5-6 grade basketball. Hickory Creek won 22-7 over Irving College after a strong fourth quarter showing by the Lady Hawks. Kinsley Simpson alone scored 11 points in the final quarter to help take the win.
The true star of the game was the defense by both teams. Lady Hawk Anna Templeton made plenty of steals in the first quarter to keep the Lady Tigers down to just two points. Aside from a 3-pointer from Simpson and a free throw by L.B. Guthrie, the Lady Hawks didn’t score much either in the first quarter.
Irving College’s Taylor Jagnandon scored the only two points for the Lady Tigers in the first half with a jump shot early in the game. However, the Lady Hawks’ defense kept them from scoring again until the fourth quarter.
Hickory Creek also found it difficult with Simpson scoring the only points for the Lady Hawks in the second quarter with another triple.
Neither team managed to put up any points in the third quarter. The Lady Hawks, however, flew in the final quarter to take the win.
Willa Denning started the fourth quarter putting up a shot under the goal for Hickory Creek, and Simpson followed it up with another 3-pointer and a steal that led to a layup. The Lady Hawks tore up the court with Simpson grabbing rebounds and sinking shots.
Irving College also put up some points in the fourth with post player Emma Lyle catching fire, but it was too late.
The Lady Hawks took home the trophy and earned their reputation as a threat this season.
