Irving College Lady Tiger Kristen Turner, center, looks like she only has one way to go as a pass to teammate Ashlyn Fults, left, seems out of the question as the Lady Bulldogs press for points in Mondays tournament game.
Despite an Eastside Lady Bulldog comeback rally, Irving College’s Lady Tigers hung onto their 5-point lead to win the first round of the 7-8 grade tournament, 42-37, Monday at Warren County High School.Down by four points in the first, a trey by Eastside’s Shelby Smartt made the first quarter a 1-point contest, 8-7, in favor of the Lady Tigers who increased their lead to four at the half, 23-19. The Lady Bulldogs rebounded from a 10-point hole early in the game, but couldn’t break the 4-point mark.Irving College shot a dismal 32 percent from the charity stripe going 6-of-16 but it didn’t affect the ultimate statistic, scoring more points than the other team. Eastside converted 64 percent, making 7-of-11.Leading the offense for the Lady Tigers was Mia Hobbs who dominated the paint for the second and third quarters, scoring 14 of her 19 points in that time frame.Eastside’s Shelby Smartt and Savannah Winfree both broke double digits hitting for 15 and 12 points respectively as the Lady Bulldogs would have their strongest quarter in the fourth but were unable to overcome the earlier deficit. Also scoring for the Lady Bulldogs were Clara Brackley with 5 points, Emmry Cummings 3 and Dallis Melton hit for 2 points.Kristen Turner added 10 points to the team’s total tally, Ella Bond 7, Breezy Wanamaker 4 and Ashlyn Fults scored 2 points.Winning the first round, the Lady Tigers now advance to face the No.
