Irving College knew going into Monday’s game it would need a victory over Boyd and a little help from its rival Eastside to claim the regular season crown in the 7-8 grade boys league.
Chance Hobbs made sure the first thing would happen, but Morrison didn’t cooperate on the other.
Hobbs dropped 30 points in a 60-26 win over Boyd, but the Tigers will have to settle for the No. 2 seed in the postseason tournament after receiving word Morrison completed a comeback against the Bulldogs to clinch the No. 1 seed.
Irving College (9-1) had little trouble securing a win Monday night, especially when Hobbs exploded for 22 second-half points to outscore Boyd on his own. But the Tigers didn’t control the path to the top tournament spot due to losing to Morrison by five points in January – one more point than the Tigers’ 51-47 win over the Eagles in December.
Coach Randy Bess wanted his team focused Monday on the Broncos though, not the action happening at Eastside Elementary School. It seemed to be a struggle early as Boyd kept pace in the first quarter before slowly falling behind against the league’s top offensive team.
Two 3-pointers from Josh Argo kept the Broncos within one, 11-10, after the first quarter. Hobbs got off to a quick start with five first-quarter points while his backcourt running mate Freddie Trevino added two early layups.
Hobbs started the second quarter with a 3-pointer before Trevino took over the offense the rest of the quarter. Trevino sliced in for three layups in the second period and set up two more on passes to Douglas Nelson.
Argo provided a late boost to the Broncos’ morale when he sank a corner 3-pointer in the waning seconds to cut the halftime deficit to 25-14.
When the teams returned to the court in the second half, it became the Chance Hobbs show. Hobbs scored 16 points in the third quarter alone as Boyd had no answer for the league’s leading scorer.
Hobbs’ scoring outburst gave Irving College a 45-17 lead entering the fourth quarter, but he wasn’t done yet. Hobbs scored six more points in the final quarter to push his total to 30 points – the highest scoring game in the elementary league this season.
Jalen Smith came off the bench to nail two late 3-pointers for the Tigers while Argo finished a 19-point night for the Broncos with eight fourth-quarter points – including two 3-pointers of his own.
Trevino finished with 10 points while Nelson added eight for the Tigers. Smith and Tristin Gunter scored six.
Rounding out the Bronco scoring was Austin Jakes with four, Will Rivers with two and Heath Kuykendall with one. Boyd finished the season with a 1-9 record.
The elementary tournament is scheduled to start Thursday at Warren County High School. Matchups were still unknown a press time due to a make-up game between Eastside and Centertown Tuesday. Action will start at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.
