The Morrison Eagles entered Tuesday’s game at Centertown on a three-game losing streak. The home-standing Warriors hadn’t won all season. Something had to give.
The Eagles were the ones to take flight as Morrison won 32-11 to improve to 3-5 this season in the 7-8 grade elementary league.
Justin Holt scored a game-high 10 points, including eight in the first half as the Eagles opened up a big lead. Morrison didn’t allow a point in the first quarter to the Warriors while it scored 11 of its own.
Holt had four points in the quarter, getting loose around the basket for two point-blank shots. Colton Smith, Brayton Kelsey and Caleb Newby added driving layups as the Eagles took a double-digit advantage.
Holt added four more points in the second quarter as Morrison extended its lead. Kelsey added his second layup while McCall Turner got the Warriors on the board with three points in the second quarter.
Brant Young hit a free throw as well for Centertown as the home team went into halftime trailing 17-4.
A layup by Colby Elkins and two free throws by Trey Crothers started the second half for Centertown, but Morrison countered with layups from Holt, Newby and Smith.
Nicholas Williamson ended the third period with a bang as he splashed in a 3-pointer for the Warriors, but it proved to be the home team’s final points.
Morrison scored all nine fourth-quarter points, led by three points from Rylan Sliger. With a scoreless final period, Centertown fell to 0-8 this season.
Holt’s double-digit day led the way for the Eagles. Newby added seven, followed by Smith and Kelsey with four points apiece, Sliger with three and Ronaldo Martinez and Devin Martin with two points each.
Williamson and Turner finished with three points each for Centertown. Crothers and Elkins added two while Young chipped in one.
In other elementary action, Eastside needed a big second-half comeback to remain undefeated. The Bulldogs trailed 25-15 at halftime to the Irving College Tigers, but blew up for 43 second-half points to win 58-41.
Playing without star forward Tyler Beaty, Eastside got big nights from Hunter Hawkins, Raleigh Woods and Alex Yates.
Hawking scored 18 points, 14 coming in the second half, as the Bulldogs battled back to win big.
Woods scored 13 points while all 10 of Yates’ points came after the break. Dakota Nunley sank three second-half 3-pointers for nine points and Mitchell Stembridge added eight as he played in Beaty’s spot.
Chance Hobbs did all he could for the Tigers as he scored a game-high 24 points. Hobbs sank a season-high five 3-pointers in the loss that dropped Irving College to 5-3. Rounding out the Tiger scoring was Freddie Trevino with eight, Douglas Nelson with three, Jeffery McCormick and Curtis Grissom with two points each and Luke Martin and Clint Grissom with one point apiece.
