MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) — Memphis interim head coach Darrell Dickey will remain with the Tigers next season as an assistant on Mike Norvell's staff.

Dickey is the first hire that Norvell has made since being introduced as Memphis' coach Friday. Norvell is replacing Justin Fuente, who left to take over Virginia Tech's program.

Dickey was on Fuente's staff each of the last four seasons. He worked as co-offensive coordinator and assistant head coach this season after previously serving as offensive coordinator and running backs coach. Memphis averages 42.7 points per game to rank seventh among all Football Bowl Subdivision teams.

When Fuente left for Virginia Tech, Dickey was selected as the interim head coach for Memphis' bowl game. Memphis (9-3) faces Auburn (6-6) in the Birmingham Bowl on Dec. 30 in Birmingham, Alabama.
